Try this, it has worked very well for me. Have a notebook or a diary handy as you start to read and every time a distracting thought comes into your mind write it down and "park it" for later. In the beginning you'll be writing down a bunch of stuff but the more you do it and follow thru the more control you gain over those distracting thoughts. Before you begin this for the first time make an agreement with yourself "like sort of a contract with self type of thing" to be determined to stick with the plan. When you're done reading don't forget to address the things in the "parking lot". Good luck.

Choose a book that interests you...either things you know a little about or of things you may want to know more about. Do you read for pure pleasure? Do you read for new information? Do you read because you enjoy it or is it a dislike because you are told to read something?

Turn off the television while you read. Do not answer the phone.
Reduce the external distractions in the area where you are.
Establish a helpful pattern of behaviors to allow you to concentrate.

Good luck.

Depends on what causes it. If you are sleepy, try coffee. If it is just too boring or incomprehensible, ask your mates for help, or read it more than once home. Or live with it, if you're as lazy as me and can't be bothered.

Vitamins help with focus and so does eating properly. Quite often it is hard to study or take a test if you are not eating right! Your brain needs fuel!
