The majority of these answers, along with one dictionary entry, show that fate is something greatly misunderstood and mislabeled by a lot of people, and even so-called experts. Fate and destiny are definitely NOT the same thing at all.
Fate is alterable. Your fate is what will probably happen, or what might happen, IF certain circumstances prevail. For example, if you plan to walk across a busy street, you are fated to get run over by a truck. But you can thwart that fate, simply by going to the crosswalk and waiting for a green light. Many other things in life can be viewed this way too. People have avoided their fate through last-minute changes, and usually didn't realize they'd done so until later.
Destiny, on the other hand, is not avoidable, no matter what you do. We are all destined to die at some point, for example. We cannot change that destiny. But destiny is also far less specific than fate. Destiny may say you will marry and have children. It does not set any fixed date for these events. Some of us are destined to never marry, or never have children. Whatever the destiny of the human race, we cannot change or avoid it. But we can change or alter our fate.

Fate is a bunch of crap that some people who don't want to control there own lives use as a exuse for things whether they be bad of good.
I don't believe in fate. I do what I want not b/c it was destined to happen.

Man is very inquisitive by nature and he is always looking for cause for anything that is happening around him or elsewhere. For reasons known or unknown, it is customary to label the end result as an outcome of fate if it is undesirable. It is termed as luck if the result is desirable.
Fate is simply undesirable end result with cause known or unknown. It is also termed as act of God.
