If you are auditioning for a play you need a song that you can not only sing well but act through.
I am an actor, and whenever I have to sing for a play (as opposed to a musical) I tend to choose character led songs. Some you could look at are:
"I Felt Nothing" from A Chorus Line
"In His Eyes" from Jeckyll and Hyde
"To Keep My Love Alive" from a Connecticut Yankee
"Man Wanted" from Copacobana
These are just a few idea's, but take into consideration your vocal range and age when choosing your song.
There are endless amounts of songs to choose from so try and avoid the obvious. When I am looking for new audition material I go into a Borders and have a look through all their vocal scores for new ideas, so have a look around and find something that suits you and shows off your voice well.

It depends on several things: the show you are trying out for, the character you are hoping for, your age, your vocal range, etc. NEVER use a song from the show unless it's asked for. And I disagree about "Somewhere Under the Rainbow". That was probably an isolated incident getting a lead from that song. Never use a song that is pretty much owned by the original person who sang it. Everyone will compare you to the original singer, and most likely you won't match up.

NEVER audition with a piece FROM the musical you're auditioning for.
Now with that said... It very much depends on what musical and what part you're auditioning for.
I suggest finding another show by the same composer and doing a song from it to show you can do that type of song. Of find out who played the role on broadway and find another song from a different show that they sing.

My sister does this often (even tried out in Austin for American Idol) and they always say stuff like "show me how much range you have". I'm not sure exactly what song but something that takes you from high to low or vice versa......

well, it depends on what you're audtioning for.
if you're auditioning for a musical,
pick a song from a musical.
if you're auditioning for a pop type of competion,
choose a song from that genre.
