This is a question I have been debating quite some time with African Americans as well as Europeans who live in America. Do African Americans need NAACP? Why or Why not? Be specific as possible.

First, African Americans need the NAACP and any other organizations like it, if for no other reason, to have a collective voice to represent us. That being said, the NAACP will do no more for African Americans than we empower it to do. We have to join and make our issues known otherwise they will continue to run on what they think is the important issue of the day.
Its like NOT voting and then b!^@#ing abouth how lame the president is.
Second, Latinos have the League of United Latin American Citizens, (LULAC), Asians have the Conference on Asian Pacific American Leadership, (CAPAL), and gay and lesbian community, (GLAAD), even animals (PETA).
Oh, Europeans Americans have their organization also...the US
Congress.

The NAACP mostly fights quiet legal battles that no one hears about. When American businesses or municipalities are caught in discriminatory practices, who do you think sends in the lawyers to get justice? The RNC?......lol
They are also involved in community organizing, scholarships and political fund-raising.
No, they don't march in the streets anymore, they just fight the quiet battles these days. And yes, they are needed.

What does the NAACP do these days?
I don't think its an evil organization or akin to say the Black Muslims. Its an old organization the served and IMPORTANT purpose in the US post slavery up to the 1990s but I'm not sure if we need the NAACP or some people whipping the asses of these lazy, go nowhere, do nothing for themselves black people that seem so vocal in America.
Maybe if the NAACP were going into ghettos and closing down liquor stores, taking down liquor and cigarette billboards, cleaning up neighbourhoods, patrolling housing projects, building charter schools and after school programs I'd say yes, but all these award shows to give trophy's to black artist being awarded Grammys and American Music Awards and Oscars are pointless. We don't need to highlight black entertainers but average blacks who are fed up with the status quo and are tired of living up to a nasty stereotype of laziness, sexual irresponsibility, and what not.
Do I think the NAACP is like the clan...HELL NO, but it needs to change the way it does things because in 21st century America we really need to stop all this black and white...its just Americans. Americans are violent and lazy and lack education and are spreading AIDS and not taking care of their families...AMERICANS!!!!
Stevy L. there are organizations for Asians, Latinos, Arabs, Persians, Italians, and Irish living in America...they just aren't as old as the NAACP. Don't get stupid up in here.

they dont do anything anymore, besides we have everything we need to advace ourselves, alot of us just choose not to use it, we fought so hard to go to school with whites and what do we do when things are integrated???
i take advantage of every opportunity i get!!!!
i mean there isnt anything for the asians, when they come over here they have nothing and do more with themselves then a lot of blacks!!!!!!
EDIT: bubba when u hear the word american what do you think, most people think white, we wanna distinguish ourselves from eveyone else, they have hispanic and asian american too.
the NAACP was not meant to be racist it was to help blacks out back in the day, because things werent fair back then!!! go educate yourself before you speak!!!!

We needed it in the beginning, but now it is horribly irrelevant. It does not adequately address the issues that we are facing as a people today. It should either make itself relevant, or step down. Otherwise, it just exists as an excuse for non-black people to say that we are racist for having our own groups. (For the record, I think that anyone should be able to have any groups that they want - so long as those groups do not promote hatred.)

No, in fact, the NAACP needs black Americans more than they need it. The entire concept of the NAACP is racist. Would anyone accept a NAAKKK. Not at all, there would such an outcry over it that the backlash would reverberate for years. If the black community would quit using racist organizations and quit using the African prefix and just learn to call themselves Americans, like the rest of us, they would find their acceptance to be greater. Right now they are too much "in your face" with it.

Why should they have it? I don't see any association for the advancement of whites, asians, latinos, etc. Why only the blacks?
