No.
To be nominated as best foreign language film, it must be submitted by the film academy or director's guild of a non-English speaking country. As Apocalypto was an American film, it wouldn't qualify. "Letters from Iwo Jima" is entirely in Japanese, and it would not qualify for best foreign-language film, either, because it too is an American made film. But it can be (and was) nominated for best picture.

If you liked A Very Long Engagement, other Jeunet films are amazing. Amelie and Delicatessen are my favorite foreign language films. La Vie en Rose (also called la mome i think) is brilliant. Marion Cotillard from A very long engagement is really good in it. Three Colour Trilogy is good and errr For older films Francois Truffaut is the king of french cinema. If you like action ones Banlieu 13 (district 13) is amazing, its Parkour scenes (which the french invented) are unbelievable. There's a slightly bizarre musical called 8 women which is intriguing. I found Manon de Sources a bit boring but its the sequel (or prequel not sure) to Jean de Florett and Emmanuel Beart has to be the most beautiful women in the world. God I've rambled and my spelling is awful...

What country would you have them nominate it for? ... The dead Mayan empire? ... The twisted corners of the mind of a troubled man?
They may call it the Foreign Language category ... but it really is the best film from a country that does not speak English as its primary language.

No. This happens every year. I gave up on the Oscars a long time ago. I hear if you have enough money, you too can have an Oscar. Stick with the People's Choice Awards and the Golden Globes for actual credibility.

Yeah but I guess that gay sex scene didn't work for them like Brokeback Mountain.
