After living in Amsterdam for 5 years I can tell you that
housing is at a premium and difficult to find. Call the
Dutch Consulate and ask them where to hook you up
with a rental agency or click on Amsterdam, Holland
rentals..this will take you to connected sites. There are
many restrictions now for residency and of course work
and the consulate can help you there too. Houseboats
are a lot of fun to live on and you might be able to share
one, or you could live in a youth hostel for a while until
you find accomodations, also giving you time to see if
you want to make the move permanent.

Are you thinking of moving for work or take retirement? Do you posses any trade skills? How much savings do you have to take care of you in case you don't find job immediately - cause the cost of livng is very high. So the answer will depend on lot of factors which need to come as input from you in the basic question.

First and foremost: http://www.ind.nl/EN/verblijfwijzer/ See if you are allowed to stay in the country first. The website is the Dutch Immigrations website. There, you can find all kinds of offical info on moving to the Netherlands. It can be a hassle and it can be expensive.
I assume that you've already considered costs of moving there, getting a job, learning the language and all of that. You can also surf here: http://www.usembassy.nl/

Good luck!
