From my experience as a tourist, most important - good walking shoes and good city map. Explore renting bikes to get around easier and still avoid driving. It's difficult to drive/park anywhere because of the congestion and narrow streets. Most important while in Amsterdam, you want to get a feel for the culture and the liberal/social-minded attitudes of the Dutch. After you take a boat tour of the canals and see how closely people co-exist in harmony, be sure to stroll down the Red Light District as well as taking in a "coffee house". Both are displays of the Dutch open-mindedness. At the same time, the culture is deep and rich with tradition and accomplishment as evidenced by the many outstanding museums; most notable, the Rijks. Also important, allow lots of time for taking in the culture by enjoying outside cafes: coffee and cookies at 10:00 a.m.; long lunches; an afternoon soda or beer. The Dutch are very fit as they bike and walk everywhere, but they also love their leisure moments to enjoy a good conversation over a drink. If you don't pause occasionally to get the feel of it, you'll miss something very lovely about life in Holland.

Don't go immediatley nuts on the THC tip. Pace yourself. A little goes a long way and watch out for the space cake. Let's just say you'll be in your own little world for quite a spell. Other than that...have a great time.
