Its ok, irons have a tendency to die out fast. The only thing I can suggest is to get one that has a good warranty on it, save the receipt and box or UPC.
Also as far as care for it or water, just use purified or deionized water, as they contain nothing but H2O, no minerals, nothing. Other than that just keep the face clean and best of luck.

Wow, that is a lot of irons. They dont make irons the way they used to, mind you. We learned in school that in the first decades of the industrial era, appliances were truly built to last, and they did. To the manufacturers dismay, nobody replaced their machines in the next 10 yrs because they were too durable. The firms almost collapsed and died from bancruptcy.
So- these guys learned their lesson. Now they make appliances to have finite lives, so if they say, we guarrantee this baby for 5 yrs, it is good for five years and they expect your money for the next iron you purchase.
Now, my next question is 'What is the guarantee date on the irons you bought?"= 6 months? If it said one year- you can return it for a replacement. if it broke in 6 months.

Clean your iron with vinegar regularly or use distilled water. The last few irons I've bought said it was okay to use tap water, but I remember my mother always having to use distilled water in her iron.

Use a descaler regularly and you shouldn't have a problem.
Oust do a good, easy to use all purpose descaler, you might as well do your kettle while you're at it!
Failing that, just choose clothes that don't crease lol.
