Politically, the war led to the rise of the Republican party - which had been started by northern Democrats dissatisfied by the pro-slavery and netural elements in the party.
After the war the south became very solidly part of the Democratic party, and would remain so for the next century, but in the later half of the 20th century most of these Democrats left the party and became Republicans.

Well, I am from Europe , but social changes must have been the abolishment of slavery itself.
The people, black and white , became equal in the name of God ,and perhaps many other forbidden things won a reasonable reputation .For example the woman's status ...Political , I don't know , but I suppose there was a great difference between those politician who wanted to abolish slavery and those politicians who refused to abolish slavery.. ...''Gone with the winds'' is one of my favourite american films , and among my family's favourite movies. But only after I graduated and had my Bachelor's degree in literature and civilization -(A.native and B .english and american as foreign language ,)- I understood this film...Scarlet O'Hara and her family used to believe due to the history , that she is a kind of goddess that deserves more then servants , - deserves slaves ...and that was worth to loose the lives of men from rich families to win a war in order to keep the slaves...The rich family preffered to send their boys to war , instead of giving freedome to the slaves ...I don't know what to say...

And then the world changed. There are moments when a new world is born from the pregnant pause of history; though the pangs of delivery may sunder nations and destroy a way of life. Men are once again sent on the move, searching yet again for the utopia they thought they knew. From this wreckage of men's lives is wrought a nation swelling with vigor and might.
