RE:
Who were the original characters of Sesame Street?
I was watching Sesame Street with my daughter, and my mom told me that they added so many different characters since the show started in 1960 something, but she didn't know who the original characters were...So who were the original characters??

Yes Kermit was on Sesame Street in the 80's when I used to watch. Remember the segment, "News Flash?" Kermit would be dressed up like a reporter and he'd be at the scene of nursery rhymes interviewing the characters.. I think I remember one where he was at the scene where Humpty Dumpty had fallen off the wall and they were trying to put him back together.

I remember that Mr. Hooper was one of the originals. He was really old when the show started, and he played the store owner, and when he died, they had to explain to the kids where Mr. Hooper was and what happened to him.
Bert and Ernie, Oscar the Grouch, Big Bird, and some humans (whose names I do not remember) were the original cast, some more I know I forgot.
It started in 1968 or 1969, if I'm not mistaken.

"Cast members Bob McGrath, Will Lee (Mr. Hooper), Matt Robinson (Gordon Robinson) and Loretta Long (Susan) were the original human cast members.
Big Bird and Oscar the Grouch were the only Muppets to regularly appear in Street scenes, while Ernie and Bert and others debuted in separate segments. Big Bird had a much more naïve voice and a smaller head with fewer feathers, and Oscar was a "toxic" orange."

horray Sesame Street! my favorite when I was a kid in the 80's. There was suffalapagus (totally spelled that wrong), oscar the grouch, gordon (just a random guy who hung out on the block), the count! (love him), grover, bert & ernie.....so many more I can't even think of but your question just made me smile on a bad day, thanks for the memory :) ..........in response to someone's answer I don't think Kermit the frog was part of Sesame Street, he was a muppet as in Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear etc.

Big bird, Bert and Ernie, the Count, Cookie Monster, Harry Grover, Prairie Dawn , Oscar, Mr. Suffalophagus, Franklin (A little black kid that was popular and cool and loved reading, always singing a hip learnng song), Guy Smiley , the twiddle bee bug family and a man puppet named Mr. Smith (grover always bothered him with the wrong pizza deliveries, also a crazy guy puppet that smashed letters all on his head). And a rock and roll singer that remined you of Elton John. I am sure I missed some but not many. Hope this helps
