My 1997 Ford Contour doesn't start. I had to replace the battery because the old one was shot and now starting the car is "hit and miss". Sometimes it starts right away, but sometimes it won't start, it will just continue turning over and over. Any ideas on what could be the problem?

change your plugs and wires if that doesn,t do it itsounds like you jumped time which means new timing belt but try tune up first if you dont have good spark ,contours don't like to run

Impossible to specifically diagnose without seeing, but generally speaking a car not starting is either a problem with fuel or fire.

If car is turning you know you have electrical to starter. What you don't know is if you have spark, which you'd need to trace from distributor to spark plug, or if you have fuel, which could be clogged fuel filter, bad fuel pump, carb or injectors (don't know if 97 Contour has FI).

My first guess is a fuel delivery problem at cold start. Hope this gives you something to start diagnosing.

Best to you.

I presume you have given a tune up at least.

Sounds like your timing is off, maybe your fuel pump is going out, or bad fuel filter. I cannot tell you what to do on it. What you do is go to a Automotive parts store and buy a Haynes Automotive book on your year and model of vehicle. THey can show you and even give you the specs on timing your car.

They also have a trouble shooting guide which is invaluable. Since your car starts here and there you do not have any MAJOR problems then.

Getting a fault code doesn't necessarily mean replace a sensor- have it diagnosed. Theres a spreadsheet with testing that needs to be performed to find out why that code came up! Thats a system lean code... Good Luck
