possible causes-
1- blocked heater core or heater hose
2- low level of antifreeze
3- a worn out water pump. i've seen cars where the vanes on the water pump impeller are worn away from rust in the system. without the vanes the pump cannot move enough water to run the heater. Notice !! if this is the reason the next thing to go wrong will be a cracked head from the engine overheating. it can do this without giving any warning like a high temp guage or idiot light.
4- while i doubt a plugged radiator is the problem it is possible.
5- its possible that the problem is in the deflector vane that mixes outside air with heated air inside the ductwork. many cars no longer control the heat by the water flow but do so by mixing outside air with heated air. usually its a broken control cable here
if your system is vacume controlled them it could be a loose or blocked line or a bad diaphram
a few easy tests you can do yourself;
1- with a cold engine remove the hoses going to the heater coil, use a garden hose to run water through the coil. you should get a nice full stream flowing through it
2- also with a cold engine remove the radiator cap and start the car. run until it warms up enough to open the termostat. check to see how much flow there is in the system. again there should be a fast full flow through the radiator.
3- check the control cable for function or if possible check the deflector vane [ you may have to check the vane if your system is vacume controlled]

I had the thermostat changed by 3 different mechanics in the past 1 and half - the heat worked until a couple weeks ago. Now it blows out cold air. The car temp gauge sometimes reads hot but does not overheat - I can turn the car off and later the gauge reads normal - my brother said have the...

Make sure the antifreeze level is accurate first. If so, the coolant may not be within spec and may need to be exchanged. Could also be a blocked heater core...

No heat in car---means no coolant .circulating thru htr.core.
#1 Feel top radiator hose(,not hot) at temp of eng, mid range, take
top radiator hose loose from Rad. connection.Start car water should come out fast.Reconnect. Radiator fan,it should come on,with eng temp mid range, look at it ,let it cycle a few times
#2 If fan does come on ,watch it cycle a few times,Sometimes fan can be intermitent/Relay
#3 no fan could be relay or fan motor,Unplug connecter at fan and run a wire from fan connection to pos batt.Fan should operate .
#4 This is a step I did after working on vehicle that had temp prob.
no heat at top radiator hose/I disconnected top radiator hose and
started eng,as soon as water started flowing from top hose,I put host on top radiator connection/summary air lock in system.CAUTION only connect or disconnect Hose when Eng is cool.

you might want to take it to another mechanic and ask about a new heater core
