If I just sell anything I will have to pay fees and I want to sell to help get myself out of debt.

You are correct in thinking that you need some sort of strategy when selling on ebay and not just "sell anything and everything you want."

eBay is not the eBay 4 years ago when anything you list actually sells. If you want to earn serious money from eBay, you need to have a well-thought out business model. Selling on ebay is getting tougher -- just look at the number of auctions that closes without a bid. Go to the boards on ebay and you will hear even oldtimers complaining about how stiffer competition plus higher fees make it so much harder to sell on ebay.

The key to a successful eBay selling is simple -- Sell products that people actually want.

eBay has several ways for you to determine exactly what the hot items to sell on their marketplace:

Items In Demand = the most popular items currently within that particular category. To see the In Demand page, go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/sellbycategory.html

Hot Items by Category Report = a monthly report that lists the fastest growing categories on eBay for the previous month. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/whatshot.html and select "Hot Items by Category" from the menu on the left.

eBay Pulse = "a daily snapshot of current trends, hot picks, and cool stuff on eBay". Go to http://pulse.ebay.com/ to see eBay Pulse in action.

Merchandising Calendar = eBay promotes specific categories on its home page each month. Savvy eBayers know that this home page exposure results in more interest in such categories. Go to http://pages.ebay.com/sellercentral/calendar.html to view the current Merchandising Calendar.

If your goal is to get out of debt, I certainly wouldn't make that problem larger by going out and buying what appear to be hot ticket items to try and make a quick buck. Plus you are running up against lots of competition that way and run the risk of being stuck with dead inventory that you can't move/sell and then you will be even more in the hole financially Why not start small...sell a few unwanted items you may have around your house...or go garage saling or to thrift stores to see if you can pick up cheaply a few items that you can turn around a good profit on. I did this year ago and while some items only sold for a few dollars per item, I typically made a huge profit on each item as I only paid a quarter or so for the items I bought and listed. On the upside, every so often you will have something that sells that will surprise you and make up for those little sales. I once spent 50 cents on a few snoopy glasses...they sold for over $300!

Why don't you offer to sell stuff on e-bay for people and take a percent of the profit. I have a ton of stuff I need to get rid of but I'll end up giving it to charity because I don't have the patients to deal with e-bay and then packaging and shipping. There's a company called Help You Sell that does this but they're selective over what they will sell due to limited storage space. If you can figure out a work around I'm sure your would get a lot of business with little upfront investment.
