I have seen some very messy houses and then I have been in houses that have the plastic covering on the furniture and are the rooms are roped off with the velvet "bank/movie" ropes, these are average homes, total neat freaks.
The messy homes are usually people going through some issues, in time they clean or offer in a subtle way to help out.

It was a whole house. The woman had 5 kids. They did what they wanted. There was half eaten food everywhere, dirty dishes, dirty and clean clothes everywhere, and even dirty diapers everywhere. They had animals in the house, that no one ever cleaned up after. The yard, the vans, and the kids were filthy. Child services knew this and never did anything. It was gross, and you can imagine the smell. Like a zoo, but 100 times worse.......

It was memorable not only for the usual collection of papers and mail and newspapers on, and spilling off of every surface, but because they had a glass cage with a dead tarantula in it. No one ever even threw out their dead. The really bad smell came from the kitchen, inch think brown grease was on the walls and untouched on the stove, the refrigerator was full of drippy paper cartons with mold because they had given up cooking years ago. In case you are wondering, it belonged to a couple with two children who hated each other after the wife came down with MS, daddy refused to help her and she refused to have help come in as she didn't want to face her increasing disability. Truly a sick scene.
I never made it to the bathrooms, I just couldn't.

There where paths so you could walk through each room(like the living room was clothes everywhere on floor except for path to hallway). Smelled like feet, but more like what i would imagine a dead persons feet would smell like. That was the only time i ever went in their b/c it was so disgusting.

a hospital room with an alcoholic having a bleed out after jaw surgery who was having DT's and heroin withdrawals and who had pulled out multiple IV sites. Blood was on the bed, floor, walls, ceilings. It smelled like iron and I felt very overwhelmed and hot (due to protective gear) because I thought the bleeding would never stop.

my ex husbands house 3 months after I left, could not walk over all the pizza hut boxes and needed a shovel to pick up all the crap that was thrown all over the floor. Why did I do this, cause he was put in a hospital for 6 weeks and I did not want my son to see the state that he lived in. Did he appreciate it, NO

It smelled like the city dump. There was garbage and rotting food everywhere. It was the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. I don't know how my friend was able to live like that. Thats why I'm not friends with her anymore.

My college roommate was such a slob. There was trash all over the floor, food stains on the carpet, clothes EVERYWHERE, and the stench of feet because her boyfriend stayed over all the time, and his feet smelled really bad. My side of the room was completely opposite of that; it was compulsively neat. We were the Odd Couple!

My friends bathroom. I was there last week and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned since he moved in 3 yrs ago. He cuts his own hair so there was hair on the counter, floor and the back of the toilet.
The sink had, of course, hair, toothpaste, soap scum and what looked like cream corn all over it.
The toilet looked like someone had fired a mud cannon at it and the bottom of the bathtub was a dark brown colour. It looked like you'd need a shower after the shower!!
