Is it your duty as a friend or loved one to tell them that they suck and not to embarass themselves or are you supposed to support them in what they want to do no matter how much they suck?

You are in danger of going into an area where even angels would fear to go.

Let the person do whatever they want to do. If he/she wants to make a fool of him/herself and have Simon cut him/her down, let the person do it. In watching this year's competition, it is clear that the judges are being more cruel, or as the producers say, honest, than they have been before. You can't stop the person from going to the idol contest, no matter what you would say. The only result will be that the person will get mad at you before leaving to compete. The best thing for you to do is to stay out of it.
