I'm traveling for business on Valentines day this year, I'm going to surprise my girlfriend and bring her with me. I'm staying in downtown Detroit at the Courtyard on Jefferson Ave. I'm looking for a nice restaurant to take her to on Valentines day evening. I need some ideas.

How about the Southern Hospitality restaurnats (Sweet Georgia Brown, The Woodward, Seldom Blues, Grand City Grill), or the Andiamos or some place nice in Greektown (trapper Alley by the casino on Beaubian st.)

If you are going to spend a good amount of money, recommend the Rattlesnake (very upscale and expensive). They have a web site if you want to view their menu and pricing.

Within walking distance from the hotel, and also upscale and pricey, are Coach Insignia and Seldom Blues, both in the RenCen. Also, the Courthouse Brasserie, but they only have about 8 tables and you actually have to be buzzed in. Reservations at any of the above will be necessary for Valentine's Day.

I agree with the previous post about Roma Cafe. Authentic and down to earth. Recommend reservation there, too.

If you're looking for reasonably priced good food in a more casual atmosphere, Sweet Lorraine's in in the hotel (is it a Courtyard or a Doubletree? I thought it was Doubletree), and Tom's Oyster Bar is pretty much next door, and Greektown is just a few blocks away. The casino in Greektown has an excellent restaurant, as well. If you're drinkers, there are plenty of wonderful bars in the area to hit for an after-dinner drink.

If you really want to take her to a unique and very old school Detroit place then there is only one answer. The Roma Cafe. This is the oldest restaurant in the city and well hidden in the back of Eastern Market. It is Italian food and they only have waiters and most are from Italy, they have panelling on the wall and you really feel as if you are on the set of the Godfather. You go more for the event but the food is excellect (It is the only place I would ever recommend getting spagetti as a side dish.)

All those other places are ok but you can find them in any city, if you really want something unique and truly detroit than check out the Roma Cafe. I will warn you that you feel as if you are driving to a mob hit when going there but it is worth the trip and not far from your hotel. If you really want to go over the top......eat at the Roma and go over to the Whitney and the 3rd floor for dessert or a nightcap. That way you get to experience 2 great spots and not play the full Whitney prices.

Ok, the guy who said Xochimilko in Mexican town should try Armando's instead. Xochimilko used to be really good and they still have my little cousin's picture up where they used to have all the baby pictures, but it's not very romantic and the quality has gone down considerably in the last couple of years. Rattlesnake club is nice and on the water, so it's more romantic, but a little pricey. I also like the Traffic Jam, which I think is on Second by Prentiss. They have their own dairy, microbrewery and bakery, so everything is very fresh. The menu has a lot of different items and you can get a secluded table. Either way you go, make reservations ASAP.

Sinbads on the river, great place. They are also giving away a FREE night out , just go to the below site to see if you can get it

They offer a great view and some clam chowder that is BEYOND great. Really a Gem of Detroit and Seafood for the motor city, its on jefferson but hidden, just maybe 1mile north of belle isle, but before downtown, and not by the grosse pointe side.

:)

You have a couple? Interesting... The Aquarium? Not very romantic. Neither is Rainforest Cafe or any other Landry's restaurant. Try outside of downtown.

I would say the Whitney. It is beautiful and in an old mansion. Definitely very romantic (albeit expensive). Also, there is a riverfront Andiamo's which is a very good Italian restaurant. Or, you could try the Rattlesnake Club. The three are all very nice.

you have came to the right person.

for some authentic Mexican, there is plenty of restaurants on Vernor Highway on the southwest side. Xochimilco Restaurant on Bagley is one of the top in the state.

For Greek food, you could go to Monroe street between Beaubien and St. Antoines. I recommend Pegasus or Hella's.

or, on the same street as Greektown (Monroe), if you want what, in my opinion, is the best Pizza downtown, you could go to Pizza Papalis.

Depends on how expensive you want because you can go anywhere from Greektown to the Whittney. Ask the hotel, they can give you lots of ideas.
