How is this guy going to help the Steelers?? They are a 3-4 defense and he only knows the 4-3. He is a first year def. coordinator. Seriously was this the best candidate the Steelers can get?? You cannot play a Tampa 2 defense with a 3-4. It just won't work!

Mike Tomlin was a fashionable hire and the Steelers are going to pay a big price for being fashionable.

It was a great hire. He's not as experienced as some other options, but he's very bright, understands the game, and his players would lay down in front of a truck for him.

The biggest thing is that the Steelers look for different things in coaches than other teams. They're looking for a long term commitment...they've had 2 head coaches in the last 38 years. They went with a very similar candidate with their last hire: a young secondary coach turned defensive coordinator that would have to replace a Pittsburgh legend. That was Bill Cowher. People make a big deal about replacing Cowher, but hiring a 35 year old to replace Chuck Noll was a bigger coup than this.

The Rooneys aren't looking for a big name to come in and leave a few years later for more money. They want someone there to build a franchise, the way they did it back when they got control of the Steelers. The common thread is that they were all young (Noll: 37, Cowher: 35, Tomlin: 34), intellegent football minds, and great motivators. I love this hire.

EDIT: Michael Smith wrote a great article about this.

this might properly be an particularly dumb question....right this is why: a million. Roethlisberger gave the owner "permission" to seek for out a head coach???? final I checked QB's had no longer something to do with staffing. 2. What could large Ben comprehend approximately what some coach did for Matt Leinhart? Did I omit some thing are Roethlisberger and Leinart acquaintances? Did they pass to a similar college? 3. check out the Steelers coaching historical past- 2 coaches interior the previous how some years? 30? 35? it is absurd to think of that the Rooney's could ever be that fickle. (As a edge observe to the fan apprehensive a pair of rookie head coach -- i'm very almost beneficial that bill the large became a rookie head coach) 4. I purely went to the Pittsburgh submit Gazette website and searched the call Lane Kiffin and did no longer see your source for this counsel, what's up with that? in an attempt to answer the question no longer GONNA ensue!!!

Dick LeBeau is staying on as defensive coordinator, and at the very least, some elements of the 3-4 zone blitz will remain. Tomlin himself has said that just because his own preference is for Tampa 2 does not mean that he has to install that system in Pittsburgh.

Time will tell, but Tomlin looks like a good hire so far.

Yeah but LeBaeu is coming back so that should help if he attempts to switch it to a 4-3. I really am unsure of all this and don't really like it. Give him a chance though maybe he will be ok and maybe he will be fine with the 3-4. As to him just being a first year Coordinator that doesn't mean he can't do it.

One thing you must remember the Rooneys are not the Jerry Jones ,The Al Davis`s etc. If they put there confidence in him
they had a reason. The reason they did not wait for Rivera was
they felt they had there man. Watch this guy tear it up.

No, not at all. Just go back and look at the experience Chuck "The Emperor" Noll (as Myron Cope liked to say) and Bill Cowher had when they were hired. And those two turned out pretty bad, didn't they?
