Well, I don't know about you, but this is what I would put in my iPod:
John Mayer, Joss Stone, Jack Johnson. Oldies like Air Supply, Aerosmith, Alanis Morissette, Bon Jovi, The Cranberries, Jewel, Natalie Imbruglia, Mariah Carey... Other artists like Justin Timberlake, Linkin Park, Dido, Lauryn Hill. My list is really endless so there you have a couple of artists to look into if you like them.

When you get your iPod and have finished downloading the iTunes look at the ITunes store. You don't have to buy it from there but it could give you a good idea of the type of music. Also you get an email sent every Tuesday about new music. Or you could just watch the music channel...!

You can find a complete list of Billboards hot 100 at www.billboard.com It lists the top 50 songs (for free) in the US based on airplay and record sales. ( I think you have to pay for the complete chart.)
You can also view tops songs from other types of music such as adult contemporary, dance, country, and rock.
I could recommend my likes and dislikes but going to this site will give you the opportunity to decide for yourself what you like best.

This should get you going in terms of Top 40 (in this case, Top 100). It breaks it down by genre as well, just in case pop isn't your thing:
