Largest in area will be Jacksonville.
Not sure about population-wise...if you just count the city proper (i.e....only inside the city limits) it's probably Houston. Metro area, I'd guess Miami or Atlanta.

Houston, TX. Not only is it the largest city in the South, but with a population of over 2 million it is the fourth-largest in the entire country. Los Angeles is larger, and it is in fact southerly, but California is considered part of the West, not the South. San Antonio and Dallas are the second and third largest cities in the South (7th and 9th nationwide, respectively), and they are both also in Texas.

By comparison, Jacksonville is the 13th largest city in the US, and Atlanta is only the 35th. Miami is the 45th.

I saw a thing on this not too long ago. When you are talking real south it is Miami, when you are talking extended south, it is Dallas, but San Antonio is the "Fattest" city in America. Why would you want to go to the south though? The happoest day of my life was getting out of the army and being able to move back north!

If you go just a little further south ( of the border ) you'll find the worlds 2nd largest city( population wise ). That would be Mexico city at 18,131,000. And if you like; going even futher south you also hit # 4 in world, Sao Paulo Brazil, at 17,711,00

Houston if you count Texas as a "southern" rather than "western" state. The largest population for a true "southern" city is Atlanta.

Land area - Jacksonville, FL

Population - Houston, TX (if you count TX as a southern state and not a western state. Since TX was part of The Confederate States of America during the Civil War it is a true southern state.)

Stats from the U.S. 2005 census.
