If they both came from the same engine size it is possible to exchange transmissions now. If you do not know that then as long as the mounting holes on the transmission cases are the same, they will fit on the engine. Now to actually go into the transmission and change that would be impossible if I remember correct. Like trying to make a 305 to a 350. It is possible but the costs are prohibitive.
You might change clutches but it is the internal gears of the different transmissions that are different that make them unique.

It would probably be cheaper to find a 1987 200x, take the complete engine out and then install it into the 1988 200sx.
