You didn't mention the beach. While you probably won't be sunning yourself in winter, you can check out the surfers at the foot of Sunset for the cost of parking.
Another cheap option is Griffith Park (Vermont Avenue, north of Franklin), with great hiking and views and the observatory that just recently re-opened.
Also don't forget food. L.A. has lots of awesome, cheap ethnic restaurants. You can find them all over the city, but a lot are within walking distance of the subway stations in east Hollywood.

The best way with the few days you have is to rent a car and if you have a smart phone use or get the best traffic app for your phone then you will need a guide book for the los angeles area in order to program the addresses to the places you want to go as well as the address of the place that you are staying so you can get back there after a day of fun and not get lost in the big city..

I've lived in LA all my life and recently my husbad, son and I have been exploring LA.
We've been to Union Station, Olvera Street, Malibu Creek... there are lots of museums in LA too... I just found out that there is a guided tour of Downtown.... something Ive never done...
You can go whale watching in San Pedro... where they also have lots of restaurants (we love to eat)...
How about sporting events or historic places? They're fun!!!
Good luck and enjoy LA!
