I think other people are guessing and doing a bad job of it.
The red shoes and corset represent feminity and sex as fo the eyelashes. the first season was packaged to forieg markets as a sexual farce. At the end of the first season DVDs you will find an extra which includes how the show was sold in Japan. It is all about sex and little to do with medicine. In the US they tamed down the intro to get it by the censors. Red symbolizes passion and at the same time it symbolizes blood. This show is about a woman who is torn between being a doctor and being a woman. It comes up again and again in her relationships with men. She is quick to get drunk and wake up with complete strangers and each time she does it leaves her in trouble. I think the best thing they ever did to explain this thought was to have Meredith tell both Finn and Derek that when she gets all dressed up she wants to be treated like a girl and romanced. As for the person who thought it had to do with her shoes. They were leopard skin. Izzie never wore a corset . She wore panties and a bra. And Cristina does not wear fake eyelashes. It is all make believe to get you to think about the dual life Meredith has to live each day.
PS. What you are supposed to get from the show is that Meredith was a lonely child growing up and that now she has to learn what it is to be part of a family, and to be part of a couple, and to be a doctor, and to take care of her mother, and so on. She is telling you in her voice overs what makes her tick, what her anatomy is and how she is learning to be one with her universe. You are also supposed to enjoy the sexual banter and the medical cases. If not, you are watching the wrong show.

Because like any popularly accepted/appreciated show it is all about sexual chemistry as well. So not only are these stories swirling around the Seattle Grace Hospital and their residents, attendants and patients medical experiences...they concentrate on the personal experiences as well. Keep watching, you'll see...
Just like any other high stress, overworked occupational situation (Medical, Hospitality, Etc.), sexual tension and relationships pop out anywhere and everywhere.
I personally love the show, you are supposed to get entertained by the program and understand like with any occupational drama: St. Elsewhere, CSI, Rescue Me, ER is the underlying human element of human nature.

In the one of the episodes in the first season, one of the women that dies has red high heels that Meredith owns. The corset represents Izzie because if you remember she modeled in college to pay for college. The eyelashes represent Sandra Oh's character, though not sure why... Maybe I missed that one!
