If you're looking for an island (which I would suggest), I recommend the island of Andros. It has been a couple years since I've been there, but if I remember correctly it is a two hour ferry ride from Rafina. I would recommend staying in the town of Batsi - it has a very nice beach, couple of restaurants, and I think only one or two clubs. The people are extremely nice and the landscape is beautiful. If you're able to travel around the island (there are places to rent scooters), there are many beaches, archaeological sites, waterfalls, etc. to be seen. Plus, you can island hop via ferry from Gavrio, which is the main port on the island.
Below are a couple of links that should help you out:

http://www.andros4u.com - this is the place I stayed while visiting the island. They were absolutely wonderful and very hospitable.

CK told you exactly how it would be perfect.....I have done just what she said....from Poros you can also take day trips out to other smaller islands also and walk around them...they are nice also........if you want to go the "touristy" route then of course the larger islands etc...but what CK told you is very nice, fun way to see Greece. I always use Athens as my home base then go from there....you can even go by train north to the Halkidiki area that is also a nice resort area for families and young people plus great food....just depends on what you are looking for...they have it all

I would recommend all the islands of course! But try to visit Mani, in Southern Peloponnese! It has great places, beautiful&clean beaches! Breath-taking scenery! Especially Karhamili! It's a beautiful summer resort! It's a small village next to the sea, in the foot of Taigetos (the bigest mountain in Peloponnese)! It's very popular around Europe!

Why not do both? Start off with a few days in Athens - take a train down to Napflion and Argo. Splash out on a cab to Galatas and take the 5 minute water taxi to the beautiful island of Poros. Then when you're done take a ferry or hydrofoil back to Piraeus and Athens. It is easy to do and means you see a really nice range of places.

Agreed... why not both?
The nicest hotel I've seen in Greece is the Terra Maris in Hersonissos, Crete. Check out their website:

Sorry, but I'm not as much help on the mainland.
