Man that could be anything... if it's suddenly been going slow, make sure your primary disk space isn't too low. If it is, delete some programs and/or games. Also, run defragment on all drives - that should help a bit.
After that, check your startup programs. No more than a few things should be running in the background. Go to Start...run... and type in MSCONFIG. Then go to the last tab and uncheck all the programs that you don't need to start with your PC.
Lastly, download a free Spyware/Adware program from download.com, like Ad-Aware SE, and scan your PC to get rid of bugs. Then do a complete Antivirus scan with any AV softwaree.
If the PC has been running slow for a long time, well, then it's probably time for an upgrade...

Many reasons can cause a slow running PC, maybe your PC is affected by one of them or more. But generally speaking, there are three major categories of reasons can cause a slow running PC: software, hardware and virus issues. Part 1: Slow running pc for the software cause 1. Startup overload:stop those unnecessary start-up programs which will affect computer boot time a lot. 2. Improperly BIOS setting 3. Bloated windows registry, for this part I do like to recommened this aoftware that named Wondershare registry optimizer. Part 2: Slow running pc for the hardware cause 1. Insufficient RAM 2. Badly Fragmented Hard Drive 3. For the CPU problem Part 3: 1. Slow running pc for the Spyware & Viruses cause 2. Run more than 1 antivirus software at the same time

Poor man's answers:
1) Clear your desktop (put stuff in files on your c-drive and then put shorcuts on your desktop instead of the whole files)
2) Delete all the files you don't use any more
3) Delete programs you don't use any more (go through "control panel" and "add/remove programs"), just don't remove anything important
4) Defrag after you've done your deleting
5) If it's still running slow, see if you've got background programs running. Spyware, adware and virus stuff are the social diseases of internet use, and you never know when you've brought something "home". Spyware and adware removal programs are pretty good at removing this stuff.

It could be tired and out of breath. Actually, you may have too many programs running at the same time. Hit control, alt, and delete and bring up the "task list" and then hit the "processes" tab. This will show you which programs are running. Exit out of all of the ones you definitely know you do not need. Do not exit out of ones you have doubts about as you probably do need those operating....

Download and run AdAware as well as SpyBot Search and Destroy. These take out a lot of spyware and things will slow down your computer greatly. Also do a full virus scan afterwards.
