Such as Iowa or Illinois?

Yes, both Iowa and Illinois were named after specific groups. Oklahoma comes from the Choctaw "Red People." Nebraska comes from the Oto words for "flat Water" (after the Platte river, which is very wide but also very shallow). The Dakota are a branch of the Sioux. Those are just the ones I know off the top of my head, I'd be suprised if about half the states names weren't of native origin.

Yes, many states names came from Indian names. I think Iowa and Illinois both came from Indian names, many towns names did, too,

Indiana derives from "Indian lands"

Illinois is named after the Illini tribe

Ohio is from a tribal word for "great river".

"Wisconsin" is the English spelling of a French version of an Indian name for the river that runs 430 miles through the center of our state. It most likely means "River of Red Stone" or "River of the Great Rock."

Indiana -- Land of the Indians

yes. Alot of them in fact. I am from Minnesota, and our state, as well as north and south dakota, are named after native americans. I believe many in the upper midwest are. We also have alot of towns, railroads, casinos, etc. named after indians or indian tribes. (Hiawatha, Minnetonka, Mendota, Mystic Lake, etc)

Ohio gets its name from the Iroquois meaning "Great Water" (aka the Ohio River).

That's one! :)

I think Alabama is another. (It is taken from an Indian tribe name, I believe).
