That depends - are you asking which was the first one made or the first one in chronological order?

In order of filming:
Star Wars : A New Hope
Star Wars : The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars : Return of the Jedi
Star Wars : The Phantom Menace
Star Wars : The Attack of the Clones
Star Wars : Revenge of the Sith
Chronological Order:
(1) Star Wars : The Phantom Menace
(2) Star Wars : The Attack of the Clones
(3) Star Wars : Revenge of the Sith
(4) Star Wars : A New Hope
(5) Star Wars : The Empire Strikes Back
(6) Star Wars : Return of the Jedi

Lucas started with the fourth movie, and worked it's way until the end (Return of the Jedi; which is why it is called the IV movie), then made the first movie, where the plot is before the plot in A New Hope. Hope I'm not confusing!

Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace is the first one. Then Star Wars II: Attack of The Clones is the second. Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith is the third one. Star Wars IV: A New Hope is the fourth. Star Wars V: The Empire Strikes Back is the fifth. Star Wars VI: Return of the Jedi is the sixth and last one in the series. They did not come out in order but that's the order it's supposed to be.

Star Wars (later retitled Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope)
Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back
Star Wars: Return of the Jedi
Star Wars: The Phantom Menace
Star Wars : Attack of the Clones
Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith

I think they should be watched in this order because the big secret that is revealed in Return of the Jedi won't be a big secret anymore... I am speaking for people who might not have seen the movies yet...

Episode 4 was the "first" one -- called "a new hope"
followed by episode 5 and 6. Then he started with episode 1, 2, and 3.

Stars Wars - "a new hope"
The Empire Stikes Back
Return of the Jedi
