Yes it can last for years, but is not healthy to used them after 6 months.

General Shelf Life of Makeup:

Mascara: Mascara lasts 3-6 months and is the most prone of all makeup to harbor bacteria because the wand is constantly being dipped. A general rule is anything that is a liquid has a shorter life.

Concealer: Has a life of about 18 months due to emulsion (the ingredients will begin to separate). Also, remember you’re generally using concealer to cover blemishes, which can be more sensitive and prone to infection than other parts of your face.

Liquid Foundation: You should never use liquid foundation after more than one year. Always use a sponge, and not your germ-laden fingers! If the foundation separates or smells bad, throw it out.

Loose Powder: This item can last for years.

Eye Shadow: Lasts 12-18 months if it is a cream, 2 years if it’s a powder.

Lip Pencil: Can last 3 years due to the wood and wax. Remember to sharpen and cover between uses.

Lipstick: Can hold up for 2-3 years, but if there is a color change or rancid smell, throw it out.

Lip gloss: Don’t keep more than 18 months due to a different formulation chemical composition and the same dipping problem as mascara.

If you use a base that's applied with a sponge, then the sponge needs to be replaced every few weeks. Bacteria will grow on it otherwise and it will end up causing acne. Most cream foundations need to be replaced every 4-6 months because they harbor bacteria from the sponge rubbing back and forth in them.

Mascara expires every 4-6 months because of bacteria and air exposure. Using old mascara is a leading cause of eye infections (been there done that! yuck).

Eyeshadows and blushes that crumble are old and have oxidized. Basically they won't work well because they're on oxidized bases and don't have any staying power.

Lipsticks last about 3-4 years before they start getting gummy. Once gummy, they're pretty worthless.

Yes! On Tyra Banks show she did a special on this. She put the makeup under a magnifier and it showed all kinds of GROSS BACTERIA! It freaked me out. I use Mary Kay because it is affordale and really high quality makeup. I like the cool virtual makeover tool so I can see what I'll look like before I buy. My Mary Kay consultant says to replace makeup every 4-6 months. Of course that's good for her business but if I ever got an infection from old makeup then she would look bad.

mascara/liquid eyeliner- 3 to 4 months
lipstick/lipgloss- 2 to 3 years
foundation- about 2 years

ALL makeup can expire. Some quicker than others.

It'll last a a few years but the only one you really need to worry about expiring is mascara the rest either doesn't expire and if it does you don't need to worry about.

compact powder will go bad after about 6 months, or depending on how long you use it. All the oils from your skin will cause bacteria in the powder, it will even start to smell. I recommend if you use a compact powder to throw out the puff that comes with it and use tissues everytime you apply it.
Mascara won't go bad but it will clump, I read some where that if you spray the wand with mineral water that will help break the clumps up.

Yes it does expire. My aunt went to beauty school and she says you should throw out anything you use on your eyes or mouth out every 6 months at least. I usually get rid of mascara and eyeliner every 3 months just to be safe because I wear contacts and don't want to get bacteria and crap on them.

There are exp. dates on it. Look at the packaging carefully. You should toss it after that date, especially mascara which could give you an eye infection. They put preservatives in it, but they are only good for so long to protect you from bacteria.

Yes & things such as eye make-up can cause nasty infections. I had one so know from experience. All make-up experts tell us we should get new supplies every 3 mo. My dermatologist said the same thing as did my opthamologist.
