Well I would say it all depends on the type of games you play and just how much time you plan spending gaming. There aren't a lot of games out for the PS3 yet but it's sure to be filled with the typical Sony exclusives (Metal Gear, Socom, Final Fantasy). The playstation is known for the diversity within it's game library. It's also the system known for JRP's and other types of role-playing games. If you had a PS1 or PS2 and have lot of games for those the PS3 might not be bad idea. Also, if you have a higher end tv capable of 1080p the PS3 might be what your looking for as well (because we all know the PS3 run and plays Blu-Ray discs). However, there are some problems with the PS3 and bank on spending over a grand to get the setup complete (extra controllers (50 each), HDMI (100), and games (depends on how many you get). If you have a non-sony television capable of 1080p the PS3 cannot output that signal via the component cables....only through HDMI. The PS3 cannot currently output in 1080i and most older CRT HDTV's cannot upconvert the signal to 1080 therefore it will default to 480p. The PS3 can only output in 720p and 1080p natively. The 360 offers a wider HD function in my opinion.
If you're into online gaming you'll definitely want to go with the Xbox 360. Xbox live has revolutionized video gaming and Sony and Nintendo are quickly building their own systems to compete with XBL...however it will be a long time before they can be compared apples to apples. The 360 has a huge library in it's first full year with over 100 games and many many more on the way. Many of the PS3 exclusives are finding their way to the 360 (like Grand Theft Auto, Metal Gear Solid). Also, Microsoft has its world famous Halo series with Halo 3 set to launch for the 360 this year.
In terms of features of the 360 there is an optional HDDVD drive that you can purchase to watch HD movies ($200). Within the Xbox Live service ($50 a year for XBL Gold) you can download movies, tv shows, music, demos, and much much more. The beauty of Xbox Live is the multiplayer action. Pretty much any game has some sort of function on XBL and many offer multiplayer matches. In the new Call Of Duty 3 you can get up to 24 people in an online match...madness! Also, MS is planning to release a new and larger hard drive for the 360. If you're familiar with IPTV, the 360 is capable of that as well (hence the release of the larger hard drive...for DVR functions).
I can't really comment on the wii but it doesn't seem like my cup of tea. I own both a PS3 and a 360 and enjoy both...just wish sony would get some more games out. All that's really available are ports of 360 games and some crappy exclusives. Resistance FoM was kick *** but it gets old after you've been playing it for months on end.
Good luck and happy gaming!
EDIT: To the guy talking about native 1080p....the PS3 isn't really doing that yet. It's the HDTV's that are upconverting the signal. No PS3 games are truly 1080P native except for Sonic the Hedgehog and that game sucks. Also, Motorstorm can't do 1080p either.....they downgraded it to native 720p. Check any gaming site to verify.

Xbox 360 has the best selection of games so far. They have the biggest name titles. Xblive is also really great and the gaming community is just a bunch of great people and it's really just a lot of fun. The PS3 is ok but way over-priced. You said money wasn't a problem so you could go with the PS3 but there isn't very many great games out yet. The Wii is more kid-ish but if your younger and if you not allowed to play mature games then I would go for the Wii. Overall, I say that the 360 is best.

here is ur answer. the ultimate answer
depends on what YOU WANT/ prefer
ps3:
bluray player
bluray disks (can be better resolution because of more space)
1080p
hdmi connectivity
download games
wifi (600 dollar package)
internet browser
six axis controller (motion sensor)
no rumble
360:
dvd player
1080p (but no games in 1080p right now)
hd wires
download games
NO wifi- require ethernet or wireless adapter
rumble controller
xbox live 50 dollars a yr
wii:
480p
download games
point, twist, speed, motion sensor
rumble
wifi
internet, news, weather
games.
wii- super smash bros., super mario galaxy
360- gears of war, halo 3
ps3- metal gear solid 4, resistance: fall of man
i have a 360 and wii. i love both. but i got one of the first 360s so its messed up. but id take a ps3 if i had to choose one. bluray player and great graphics and motion sensor for some games. but its just too expensive and wasnt the first to come out.
cons:
360: no motion sensor what so ever for any game, no wifi, xbox live costs money, HD but no hdmi connectivity
ps3: mad expensive, dont get the 500 dollar one cuz it has no wifi and not worth it, i believe motion sensor only for some games, no rumble
wii: compared to 360 and ps3, bad graphics (but upgrade to component cable 480p), graphics generally depend on the game, no dvd or bluray player

I'd go for Wii, cheap console price = more money for games. And it's a different experience compared to the other two consoles along with the possibility to download retro games and surf the 'net
A con may be that they're out of stock in most places, at least over here in the UK anyway.

i have a wii and xbox 360, my advice to you would be to get an xbox 360, ps3 is too new to the market and will probably never live up to the online capabilities that xbox live has established. you can alway add a HD DVD player later if you wish (and yes people HD DVD is a 1080p format and yes the xbox 360 can do 1080p thru component and vga). Xbox 360 has an established game database and hell the 360 blogs your game play.

PS3... You have a pretty much unlimited amount of games that you can get for it since it has the ability to play all of the Playstation and Playstation 2 games. The game selection right now is fairly limited for just the PS3 but the possibilities of very extenisive and out of this world games is there. I think that would be your best bet for a good investment.

I have a Wii and have no complaints. It is fun to play single player, but is an absolute hit when friends play it. There is a wide selection of games out now to choose from, plus more to come. It is definitely the best bargain of the three, but they all have their advantages.
