I started putting my babies down anyway they wanted since my five month old died of SIDS and she was on her back. I also breastfed and didn't smoke. In my SIDS group only a few babies died on their tummy and they were not deemed SIDS they were listed as suffocation, because that is suffocation not SIDS. Most of the babies were laying on their backs, sides, in strollers, in swings, etc. Suffocation is no longer on the same level as SIDS as it used to be. They have changed the way a SIDS death is investigated and now how they come to determine it was SIDS. A baby that dies from being face down in a crib, smothered by blankets or stuffed animals a crib, etc. is no longer considered a SIDS death it is suffocation. Suffocation and SIDS are not the same thing. SIDS is when an otherwise healthy baby suddenly stops breathing for no reason upon an autopsy. Suffocation is a known factor in a death so it is no longer deemed as SIDS. My daughter died on her back the same way she would have died if she was on her tummy, side, in a stroller, etc. Positioning of a baby has nothing to do with why they suddenly stop breathing there is more to it than that. I'll bet if they go back now since suffucation has been retracted from determining a SIDS death and see what the percentage is now of babies that die if placed on their backs it will not be that greatly reduced. I know more mothers of babies that died in lots of positions and the tummy is not one of them. I only know a couple of them that were on their tummy and beleive me this really irritates all of us in my SIDS group, because we did what we were supposed to and it happened anyways.
Yeah the pacifier theory is as about as good as the back to sleep theory. My daughter had a pacifier in her mouth when she died, it fell out when she stopped breathing that is what caught my husband's attention. He noticed she was not breathing when he went to put it back in her mouth. Another "THEORY" that people are going to buy into that doesn't amount to crap.

I prefer to have my child sleep on her back as they say it reduces SIDS but many people let her child sleep on their tummy, I know thats how I was put to sleep when I was a baby, and Im fine. It all depends, my sister in law has her baby sleeping on his tummy since birth, and hes 3 months now, he won't sleep on his back. I think its your preference though. If you have him in his side, he shouldn't roll over if he is in the snuggly thing, try putting a rolled up receiving blanket in front of him so hes a bit tighter in there.

My son did the same thing. He rolled to his belly to sleep cause he found it more comfortable. My ped. said that if the baby choices to sleep that way then he is fine. My book (What to expect in the 1st year) also says it's ok for a baby to roll on there belly to sleep.

Eeeks....hard question. My doctor says to put the babies on their backs, but I'm from the "old school" where when my boys were babies, you were supposed to put them on their tummies!!! (boys are 16 and 15) Now I have a 6 week old, and she "won't" sleep on her back....she startles herself awake, and doesn't like to be swaddled....so...she sleeps on her tummy.
The reason to not have them on their tummy is to reduce SIDS. You can also reduce the risk of SIDS by not smoking and choosing to breastfeed, both of which I do.
But....I would consult your doctor, just so you're both on the same page....

They say you shouldnt PUT them on their stomach, but if they roll over to their stomach then its okay because obviously thats where they are more comfortable, however, you said u put him on his side, sometimes they just fall over, so try putting him on his back and see what he does.

At two months, he shouldn't be able to turn on his stomach if you have him in a positioner. Maybe you don't have it snug enough. I definitely would NOT let him sleep at night on his stomach. It's not worth the risk. He's too young.
