I have a friend who has an old Mac and wants to transfer all of his files from the old mac to the new one. I thought I could do this via firewire cable but the old mac does not have a plug for it, it only has 2 usbs, phone and ethernet. I tried with a cross over cat 5 cable and that didn't work either. Is there another fix to this? He also wants to transfer his old emails too. Maybe there is a program out there that might do this? Thanks

Why not remove the hard drive from the old Mac and install it in the new Mac as a second hard drive. That way you will have extra storage and all of the old files. If you don't wan't it permanent in the new machine take it out again after. Don't foget to alter the hardrive jumpers and make the 2nd drive a 'slave'. It is a 20 minute job and a lot better than messing with cables.

Do you know for sure how to setup Ethernet? If not borrow a set of home routers and wires to let the router managing the network for you. Does the old Mac have a burner? Use a rewritable disc to transport the files.

You don't say which model the old Mac is, but for several years now macs have had auto-sensing ethernet ports which allow mac-to-mac connections without a crossover cable, so try using a standard cat5 instead.

If you have exhausted all of your options, data can be salvaged by removing the HD from the old machine and temporarily installing it as a slave in the new machine. If the new machine doesn't support multiple drive, an external USB or FW caddy.

Usb Wireless adaptors (wifi or bluetooth) are also an option. There are a number of ways that you can transfer your data. Including the simplest... burn it onto cd's
