When it is said that someone is HIGH on their perch that means this person thinks he/she is better than everyone else. SO, by knocking him off his/her perch means you have just brought them down to your level. WOW what a GREAT feeling it is too.

well we would use it in the term to mean shocked him maybe stunned would be a better word, as others as said maybe to bring them down a peg or two, but more so like a verbal clip round the earhole!!

They're saying they brough someone back to reality. Like a certain employee that I have here who likes to threaten to leave in an attempt to get more pay. I tell him that he is free to leave anytime if he thinks he can find better pay. That let's him know that he is not as vital as he would like to think he is.
