Every accent sounds dumb to someone else...Minnesotans sound stupid, but the state has a fairly good public education system. Bostonians probably have the most made fun of accent, but is home to some of the finest educational and medical facilites in the world. Southerners sound stupid as well, but they were smart enough to live down there in the Winter, so they have that one on me.

Sadly yes, when I finally escaped from the South, even though it was only for a little while, this became abundantly clear to me.
Rocky does not sound intelligent. Betty Boop does not sound intelligent. Ah-nuld does not sound intelligent. etc, etc,
What a person sounds like is the first thing that is noticed and what a person is actually saying is last thing noticed. Dogs and babies even understand this. You know, to the dog, "I hate you so much you are so stupid" if spoken nicely will still make the dog wag is tail.
It is not right to judge people that way but that is unfortunately how it is. I really don't know why. Maybe it's like some kind of left over cave man instinct. Maybe it's like trying to not giggle when some one else accidentally passes gas.
I don't know, but I love Jeff Foxworthy's take on language. And Larry the Cable Guy would, I think, be a lot less successful if he spoke like Anthony Hopkins, or Cornelious and Zira from Planet of the Apes.

Well I think that an accent can mean alot at times. Im friends with alot of british people and they always seem just so Proper and refined even when they are swearing, Its the accent that just makes them sound soo smart. I believe that alot of the southern accents do sound dumb. But movies brought it out like that and so your kinda stuck with it. Kinda like Blonds? there are some very smart blonds in the world but with the hair color they are sterotyped. Like having a specific accent.. you are Sterotyped! sorry!

No accent can make you sound dumb! You sound perfectly intelligent to me. By the way, everyone has an accent if you talk to the right people.

Your accent cannot make you sound dumb. Your dialect can, though. And people have stereotypes and misconceptions about speech and accents. They are the dumb ones though.

Yes. I've got a southern accent and when I hear myself on tape I think I sound like a hillbilly.

I dont think so. I have a very distinct American northeastern accent. I even use prepositions at the end of sentences like many other Ohioans.

Im from the south and even when I go to a city down here I still get made fun of because of my accent.

I think mine may... I'm southern and get some comments. Even though I live outside the US. Jeez, sometimes you can't just run far enough :)
