You should be able to find alum in the spice area in your supermarket. It is used to make pickles - it keeps them crispy.
It was used a long time ago in medicine to help wounds close - it has a puckering effect and it is excellent and effective to use on cancor sores (acid ulcors) in your mouth if you eat too many tomatoes.
I imagine that the alum would be used to help the clay bind so you should not emit it from the recipie.

Alum is similar to cream of tarter as close as I can fin. It helps add firmness to things and makes it last longer.
"Alum is used in making pickles and is found in the spice section of most supermarkets. Bought some there last week for play dough, in which I think it acts as a preservative. In pickling cucumbers, I understand it helps them stay crisp."
As found in http://guidezone.e-guiding.com/kdalumpd.htm
Hope this helped and good luck!

Alum is a crystallized double sulfate and is considered an alkali metal. In general, this is a salt.

I have owned several sets and will tell you that if try some of these crazy ideas I saw you will ruin your rims, any abrasive type rags, cleaner[brake fluid] or anything like comet will cause you grief. there are only two products to use Mother's wheel and mag "aluminum" cleaner or "aluminum bright' both require you to spend several hours to do a good job! I would take mine off the car and place them on a work bench to save my back. use a foam wax pad to apply and buff use a soft Turkish towel to remove. good luck!

You can buy it at the grocery store. It makes dyes hold VERY WELL, so maybe that is why your recipe has it in it.

Reading out "erotic" literature, it is said that young women used it in a douche, to give the appearance that they were still virgins.

I believe it's like creme of tartar. You use it to make pickles, so I guess the spice aisle.
