There are 3 types of printers: Dot Matrix (or impact printers), Inkjet (or BubbleJet printers), and LaserJet printers.
If you're looking for Brand Names, there's a million. HP, Epson, Avery, Brother, Casio, Lexmark, Sharp, etc. Just do a search for "printer brands".

In order of quality:
The dot matrix printers use a ribbon like old typewriters and literally pound the characters onto the paper. Most are just black and white printing and are good for carbon or carbonless forms:
- 9-pin Dot Matrix
- 24-pin Dot Matrix
There is another type of dot-matrix printer called a line printer. This has a bar that can print the entire line of text at once instead of only printing one character at a time and having to scroll across the page.
The two below spray the ink onto the paper. They have almots identical quality, and are usually good at creating photo-quality prints.
- Ink-jet
- Bubble-Jet
The highest quality are usually laser printers and thermal transfer printers. The laser printer uses a laser to imprint an image on a roller heating up the toner and causing a reaction that transfers the ink permanently onto the page being printed. The thermal transfer printer is often used for barcodes and special labels in various industries.
There are many makes and models of printers. If you are buying one, look for compatibility with the software you are using, the speed of the printer, and the quality of the printing.
The most common home office printers tend to be Canon, Epson, or Okidata. The most compatible seems to be Hewlitt-Packard. There are also other companies (Xerox, Lexmark, IBM, and others) that make qood quality printers and all-in-ones designed for various tasks.

Types of Impact Printers
Dot Matrix Forms characters using row(s) of pins, 9, 18, or 24 which impact the ribbon on top of the paper. Also called pin printers.
The more pins, the smoother-looking the characters.
Most dot matrix printers have the characteristics below:
Bi-directional - prints left to right and also right to left
Tractor feed - uses sprockets to pull continuous-feed paper
Friction feed - uses pressure to pull single sheets
Advantages: Inexpensive
Can do multi-copy forms
Disadvantages: Can be slow
Loud
Graphics of low quality, if possible at all
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chain and Band Printers Uses characters on a band or chain that is moved into place before striking the characters onto the paper.
Advantages: Very fast
up to 3000 lpm (lines per minute)
Disadvantages: Very expensive
Very loud
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Non-Impact Printers
This type of printer does not involve actually striking the paper. Instead, it uses ink spray or toner powder.
Advantages: Quiet!
Can handle graphics and often a wider variety of fonts than impact printers.
Disadvantages: More expensive
Slower
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Types of Non-Impact Printers
Ink Jet Sprays ink onto paper to form characters
Advantages: Quiet
High quality text and graphics. Some can do color.
Disadvantages: Cannot use multiple-copy paper
Ink can smear
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Thermal Uses heat on chemically treated paper to form characters. Fax machines that use rolls of paper are also of this type.
Advantages: Quiet
Disadvantages: Relatively slow
Expensive, requiring special paper
Cannot use multiple-copy paper
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Page Printer Works like a copy machine, using toner and a heat bar. Laser printers are in this category.
Advantages: Quiet
Faster than other non-impact printers, from 4 to 16 ppm (pages per minute)
High quality print and graphics. Some can do color.
Disadvantages: More expensive than impact printers
Cannot use multiple-copy paper

Yes, it's valid, if you get it notarized (you can get this done for free at a bank). Yes, it can be typed, because most legal forms (power of attorney for example) is typed. The signatures and dates have to be hand written. And by the way, after your death if there isn't a legal will, some courts will accept anything you have written & signed. Depending on the situation, in some cases, people had nothing but some things they wrote on a napkin, and it was accepted in court.
