In the middle of the night, our '97 Ford F150 was trying to start itself without the key being in it. My husband had to disconnect the battery to prevent it from doing this. He replaced the solenoid but that did not work. Does anyone have any ideas? I tried Googling this but I am not getting results pertaining to this particular issue. thank you!

Do you have an automatic / remote starter system in the truck? It could be this is malfuctioning or it could be that someone else has the same system and they are both running on the same frequency..so as they are starting theirs yours is getting some of the signal and trying to start itself as well.

Just a thought...

I believe it would be easy to check out. Unhook all wires leading to the solonoid. Using a volt meter set on 1.5 volts hook the meter wire up with the red wire clamping on each of the wires individually leading in to the solenoid. Clamp the black volt meter wire to a good clean ground. Check each wire leading to the solenoid for any voltage at all. If you see any voltage at all I'd think your neutral safety or ignition switch is bad.
Not to be a joker but maybe your Ford should have an exorcism!

Assuming that you have no after market devices like an alarm or remote starter, then you have a short circuit in the ignition switch.

If the key is capable of remote start you might have it in your pocket or stored somewhere in a way that the remote function is pressed in the on configuration. Check that first.

There must be a short someplace, duh, either that or it is haunted. Check your wiring and/or switch.
