I am going to agree that the Santa Monica pier isn't all that great. The rides are lame compared to Disneyland/California Adventure. If you want to go there, you should still probably just stay next to Disneyland and drive. Regardless of where you are, you will be driving the same distance. I would recommend two days at Disneyland -- one for each park. Stay nearby and just drive to Huntington Beach in the late afternoon or evening. It's a nice town with a good pier and beach. It's only about a 40 minute drive (depending on traffic) from the Disney area. To get to Santa Monica from there, you need to drive through LA and it probably takes about an hour and a half unless you get lucky with traffic. Santa Monica is probably the neatest pier, but IMO, it's not a "must see." I also recommend the Howard Johnson across from Disneyland. They have free parking for hotel guests, free internet and it is the easiest to access I-5. If don't you stay in a place within walking distance of Disneyland, you will have to pay to park there.

Head up the Ohio and jump off at Ripley. I'll pick you up there and show you that there really is a "happily ever after"

...it's starting to smell isn't it?

Yeah, that much rum, that enclosed space...Listen... if you look under the bilge water pump next to the spare jolly roger flag... down below deck .. you'll find some Glade air fresheners... try that.
