I've often looked at them and I have to really look at them twice just to take in their size, what makes them so big? They dwarf any other British coastal bird and even dwarf Ravens in size alone, what make the birds so big?

Sounds like there's a lot of good eating on the British coastal areas. The seagulls here in the states get gigantic at the popular beaches. Lots of left over food from people eating at the beach!! Our pigeons are huge too. Damn flying rats, I'm not a fan!

The gulls you are talking about are called Great Black-backed Gulls. They are the largest species of gull in the world. There are many different species of gulls. Different species are different sizes, just like different parrots are different sizes. They have evolved to fill a niche in the environment. Other gulls you get in the UK are Lesser Black-backed Gulls, Black-headed Gull, Yellow-legged Gull and other species.

Its because they eat all the waste food we leave around not the healthy fish they should be eatting, so if you think about it we get fat from eatting it so whats different from the bird getting fat if he eats it??
