It depend on what magnification u want. And it also depends on how much willing u are able to spend on it. i have a telescope and it can magnify 600 times but it cost me a fortune. If u are able to pay close to $500 then you could telescope's with 400 to 500 magnification. And also pick a 3 or a 6 inch glass part. It helps a lot. There is also some very good company's. Some are Orion and NASA so these are just examples. If u are willing to pay $200 or a bit more then u could buy a 200 to 300 magnification one. If u want to pay like $1000 then u will get some amazing ones like 800 times magnification. So it depends. And don't buy it online.
Trust me on this. The glass has chance to break and they could send you something else than you expected. So go to a store and buy one.
Hope this helped you

Here's a reputable site with info on how to buy a telescope. Do not expect to get anything even marginal for under $200. That would be about borderline between a beginner scope and junk. Also, see if there's an astronomy club around you. They're usually a good source of info.

See near the top of the page where you can "Search for questions"? Type "telescope" in there and click the "Search" button to the right of it. This will bring up all the many instances of this or similar questions that have been asked, along with the wealth of information returned by the answers to those questions. Or, search the web for "telescope buying guide" or anything similar.

Check out http://hometown.aol.com/siriusbc/telescopes.htm

There are pictures.

You want a telescope with a good mount and a large aperture. The telescope you will get will most likely be a reflector, which uses mirrors, not a refractor. Most large telescopes are reflectors because they are more practical.
