Science teacher, are you sure? A compound is formed when you combine P and 4 O elements. It's phosphate, a new molecule, by definition a compound. Compounds can be charged, no? Charged compounds or any species are known as ions. What do you think?

PO4 is a phosphate ion. There are 1 phosphorus and 4 oxygens. It is an ion, charged group of atoms. It is not an element or a compound,it has a -3 charge . It combines with 3 sodiums to make sodium phosphate, Na3PO4. It is sometimes called a radical or polyatomic ion.

This should be (PO4)3- a trivalent anion. It is the called the phosphate ion.
