This is my first pregnancy, and my first Dr. visit is today at 1:30pm. I've never had a pap smear before, and so I know they will do one today.
Is there any other woman out there who never had one until pregnant? If so, how do u deal with that? I'm very shy about anyone doing things like that.

sorry couldnt help but chuckle.. you are going to have to get over your shyness very quick if you're having a baby! when you are giving birth theres going to be a lot of strangers messing around in there ;) but at that point you wont care either, trust me. what you have to realize is these docs and nurses see a hundred "crotches" a day, for lack of a better term.. i'm sure they have seen everything and it doesnt phase them and im sure they arent thinknig anything about yours. its just their job.

If this is your first pregnancy visit, they will probably do a pap. They will also get a full medical history on you, the father, and your families. So be prepared to answer alot of questions. They want to know things like family diseases, birth defects that may run in the family, etc.

If this is your first pap and as you said you are "shy about things like that", I hate to tell you that you probably wont be too shy about it by the time the baby comes. Still uncomfortable about it? Yes! As for today, relax. When you get tense during the exam, it makes it more uncomfortable.

Hmm...you should have had your first pap smear when you were very first sexually actuve, but if that did not happen before 18, then you shoul dhave gone in at 18.

The shyness you will get over in about 5 seconds!!! You dont have a choice. Explain to your doctor that you have never had this done before, which is weird to me, but he will help yoi to explain. You will have doctors prodding at you every couple of weeks, so you will get past your issues very quickly!!!

After this pregnancy, you should get yearly paps. There are things that can happen down there that you may not be aware of, and trust me you will want to make sure everything is okay!!!

I know how you feel...and honestly the worrying about it is far worse that actually getting it done. After you have had your first baby - you will find that you ease up about being so anxious but NO woman ever looks forward to it...lol!

If it makes you feel more comfortable - bring your partner with you. They can stand at your head and you will have a drape over you so they can't see anything from that vantage point.

Also be sure to tell the nurse you are very nervous and it is your first - they will make sure to be very supportive and have the doctor be especially gentle.

The procedure doesn't take long at all...but can be uncomfortable. Just grin and bear it...after this the appointments are all easy again until after 36 weeks when you start having pelvic exams to check for dilation.

Congrats on the baby on the way!!!

I had my first 1 when I was 19 and 4 months preg. Its very easy but a little strange. They will have you undress and give you a paper gown. There will be a doc AND a nurse in the room, always 2 ppl for safety in case they try to molest you. If there is only 1, tell them you want a second person. I WA state its the law to have a second person. They have you lay down on this bed, and you have to scoot your butt all the way down until you are at the edge. Then they put your legs in sturups. You will be laying down with your legs in the air. Then, with gloves the doc will put 2 fingers in you and push on your tummy to feel your cervix. After that they will get these things that look like super long q-tips and lightly put it in you and rub the side. You will not feel it. Then its over!! You are done! The doc will ask you questions about how you feel and see if you have questions. I felt very weird when I had to do this but you have do this several more times before baby is born. I know you think you may feel shy but when you go in labor, the pain, you will not care. There will be a doc and several nurses. I even had a male nurse in the room with me, he was from nicu and had to take my baby away because of complications from birth. But he didnt even care, it almost looked like he was bored lol When my babys head got stuck in me they called in 5 other docs & nurses to come help get it out. It was a big o party! After you give birth they get you up and have you go pee and yes the door is open and the nurse watches to makes sure you dont fall in. Its very strang but when the pain comes you forget about it. Good luck! My sister in law is 2 months preg and has the same worries you do

I can't believe that you are 21 and have never had a pap before. Being sexually active you should have been having one once a month. You are going to want to get over your shyness pretty quickly now that you are pregnant. Best advice is to relax (I know that's hard to figure) Tell your Dr that its your first time and they will usually talk you through it.

yes i had my first pap smear when i was 15 weeks pregnant. Just relax down there when they do the pap smear cuz it wont hurt so much if u just relax. Also, a nurse will be there and tell that nurse its your first time and the nurse will be your support there. It doesnt take long at all.

I got my first pap during my first pregnancy, too. I told the nurse practitioner who did it that it was the first, so she used smaller instruments and was gentle. Just relax, and know that there's no need to be nervous or shy--it's perfectly normal. In fact, the person doing your pap smear probably does at least two every day!! :P

You better get use to it, because you dr. will be doing lots of checks in that area! Plus when delivery gets here, nurses and the dr. will see it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You'll get more comfortable as time goes by!!!!! Just remember, your dr. has seen it all!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Hope the pap goes well!!!!!!!!!!! I had paps before I got pregnant and most women have, but everyone still feels uncomfortable doing this!!!!!!!!!!!!! You'll be fine!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Think of something pleasant while he does the pap!!!!! It'll only take a few minutes!!!!!!!!!! Congrats on your pregnancy and you will feel less shy as time goes by!!!!! You are normal to feel this way!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Get unshy quickly because having a baby is not a private thing. While you are on the table, think about something else or count the dots on the ceiling. By the time you give birth, your doctor will know your body more intimately than your significant other. That's just the way it is.
