If you are thinking of the Statue of Freedom on top of the U.S. Capitol Building, you are in error. The statue is dressed in classical robes and wears a Roman helmet, although the helmet does feature a crest composed of an eagle's head, feathers, and talons, a reference to the costume of Native America. The Statue was designed by Thomas Crawford and modeled in his studio in Rome, Italy. The Statue itself was cast in bronze by Clark Mills and the paid employees at the Mills Foundry in Washington. No slave labor was employed at any stage in the creation of the Statue.
