WoW will continue to have the largest number of players- it's the McDonald's of online gaming with over 7 million subscribers. It's not uncommon for people to solo their way up into the 50s without much trouble. There's very little downtime and it's fun to play- at least until people start hitting higher levels where you need raid gear.
Vanguard is a far, far better game but it's for a very specific niche. I won't attract as many players because it's not designed to- advancement is much tougher, lots more group content that can't be done solo, combat is challenging (you can't auto attack and win many fights) severe penalties for dying are (gotta do corpse runs to retrieve your items) with more emphasis on diplomacy and crafting. A lot of people who enjoy WoW's style of play won't like it.
But the world is seamless- no instances for dungeons, it's truly massively multiplayer. It's definitely the most ambitious game ever done.
