First, try these 5 steps.
1. Reset your iPod.
2. Retry with a different USB port.
3. Restart your computer.
4. Reinstall iPod and iTunes software.
5. Restore your iPod.
If that doesnt work,turn the iPod around and put your ear to the back of it. If it is making a high pitched wining sound then the circuit board could be faulty. If so, bring it to an apple store with the reciept that you got when you bought your iPod. If its still not working even if there is no whining noise, bring it to the apple store anyway.

I had this problem with mine.....When it freezes....Hold the bottom in the center of your circle (Select button) and the Menu button. Hold them down at the same time. This will reboot your ipod!
