Ah, "American Pie" by the one and only 'Uncle' Don McLean. Brilliant lyrics. The majority of the song is left to interpretation; McLean has only admitted to the references to Holly in the opening stanzas. He dedicated the album to Holly so as to bring about a new surge of interest in him and his music. There are sooo many symbolic references to be construed from the song. I couldn't imagine the jester "in a coat that came from James Dean, and a voice that came from you and me" being anyone but Dylan. His being in a cast would make complete sense because of Dylan's motorcycle crash and this song was, more than anything, a commentary on the last 11 or 12 years of music since the plane carrying those exceptional men crashed. The King must be Elvis, whom Dylan's music and the folk rock scene in general kind of usurped in the '60s. I love the "thorny crown" line, it's perfect. Years before Elvis' death he was, much like Jesus, being hung upon a cross and the expectations he had to follow were near-impossible.

McLean has admitted to Janis Joplin being the "girl who sang the blues". Such an allusive song. Hey, sun, you've inspired me to ask a question on the board here regarding one "Uncle Donny". Please check it out, just click the pic. Your musical ability has certainly taken you to some AWESOME moments in time. I wish you could teach me (I don't even know how to strum correctly).

American Pie by Don Maclean. That was too easy, Sunshine. How many dead performers are mentioned in that dreadful song Rock n'Roll Heaven by the Righteous Brothers?
