Well, I am a dad, but I am fully involved in the parenting of my 8mo girl, so...

1, at 8 months, she still uses a pacifier, but she mostly plays with it, and chews on the sides/handle. She much prefers her thumb for sucking, but only when she is tired.

2, we've given her a sippy cup. She can drink from it, but she gets frustrated with the fact that she has to work harder. We first tried it at 7 months. The sooner you introduce cups (she actually drank from a plastic cup first before the sippy cup) the easier it is to make the transition later. Not giving a cup until 1yr means you have a fight on your hands. Your pediatrican will probably tell you the same, and ask you to start introducing cups at her 6mo checkup.

3, Different ages for different kids. Our 8mo old still doesn't sit by herself for more than a few seconds before she topples over. Try bying a Bumbo seat. They come pretty highly recommended, and we just got one for our daughter. It helps them work their back muscles and get used to sitting up.

4, No is something we have introduced around the 7mo timeframe. She's not crawling, but she rolls into everything, so we have started to use the word. Not that she cares, of course.

5, The high chair came as soon as she was ready to eat type 1 foods. That was when she was able to eat 32oz of formula/breastmilk a day, and can hold her head up on her own. The head part is very important. At 5 months, she should be fine.

6, Ummm, at 5 months, it was hit or miss on how much. Our baby is long and thin, and we let her eat as much as she wants, but she just isn't a big eater. The baby boy down the street born the same day eats almost twice what our daughter does. As long as they still want food and aren't throwing it up, let them eat. Ask you pediatrican if you think she is eating too little or too much at her 6mo checkup.

7, We generally don't show our baby the TV, though if we watch something (which is rare), she often is in the room with us. Her first TV was watching the Heat beat the Mavs in the NBA finals. And she watched the NFL almost every Sunday with me, while my wife did her schoolwork. We've shown her a little bit of some Seasame Street DVDs my wife has bought, but otherwise, we keep the TV off for her, as does daycare. As a result, she tends to not watch the TV that much when it is on, but focuses on her toys or her parents, and her ultimate eyecandy, the cat.

A lot of these questions you should ask your pediatrician. Many of them follow the AAP (American Academy of Pediatricians) guildlines to the letter, so you will get the same advice from most of them. That is one of their jobs, to advise you on this stuff. Use it! And if your doctor won't give you advise, find one that will. Being a first time parent is hard enough without getting guidance from your pediatrician.

Every child is different, but in my case:
1. My son never took to a pacifier, so I can't honestly answer this from experience, but the sooner the better
2. I took his bottle away at 15 months and he took right to a sippy cup
3. They'll usually sit by themselves around 6-7 months (if I remember correctly ~ my son is almost 18 now)
4. We never "teach" them the word "no" they just pick it up from us telling them no :)
5. As soon as they can sit and hold their heads up and they're big enough, they can go in a high chair
6. At 3 mo's old, mine was sucking down an 8 oz bottle every 2 hours so I started putting cereal in it. The doctor's will tell you not to, but do what you feel is right. There is nothing wrong with giving a baby a small amount of cereal to keep their stomachs full.
7. You can put them in front of the TV at any age. And with Baby Einstein and programs such as that, it's never too early.

Good luck!

1. Never used one. The sooner the better for getting rid of it. Your baby is at a great age to learn to self soothe. Slowly take her off of it over a couple of weeks (First only at naps and bedtime, then just bedtime, then not at all)

2. Slowly introduced sippy at 4 months, baby was using it by 6 months.

3. My baby was 6 months. 5 to 7 months is average.

4. "No" is reserved for serious stuff (like baby reaching into fireplace). Use it too often and it will lose its effect!

5. I put baby in it as young as 1 month while I was doing dishes. Actually used it at 4 months when sippy was introduced.

6. It is debatable if your baby should be on solids at this age. Regardless of what kind of food you choose, your baby should be eating every 3-4 hours when awake (ideally with no feedings during the night at this point).

7. At about 1 month we let it be on while she was awake (not really watching), but at about 6 months, we started watchign Baby Signing Time and baby einstein videos with her (she started signing at 10 months)

1. Our son stopped using the paci at around 12 months during the day and at 18 mos at night.
2. He got the sippy cup at around 15 months.
3. He was a late sitter...I think 6 mos.
4. No teaching was required...he learned no all by himself. ;-)
5. We started using the high chair once he got solids (around 9 mos for us as he had some allergies).
6. Can't remember.
7. TV was at about a year.

1. when did you take the pacifer away?
My first didn't give it up till she was 3, second never would take one, and thrid decided she was done with them at around 6 months lol

2. when did you first give a sippy cup?
around 6 months (the olny time they got juice was out of a cup, I think it helped with the transition)

3. when did they first learn to sit by themselves?
around 6 months they could all sit up by themselves with no help

4. when did you start teaching the word "no"?
as soon as they started doing things they shouldn't do (A quick correction and then distraction worked best for my kids)

5. when did you start using the high chair?
as soon as they could sit up un-aided

6. how much did your baby eat at this age?
as much at they wanted, I've never limited their food and I've never forced them to eat (well not as babies any way... I do tend to make them take a bit of something they don't like now that they are older lol)

7. when did you first let your child watch tv? (like baby einstein?)
3 months (you have to get a shower sometime lol)

My son is also 5 months and at about 3 months he decided he didn't want his pacifier anymore, I am now introducing a sippy cup, he doesn't really drink out of it yet just chews on it. I got a speacial cup that helps the transition from bottle to cup. He is still not sitting up by himself although he is trying real hard.
Right now concentrating on just mama and dada as first words.
He sits in his high chair every evening for his dinner.
He eats a 6-8oz bottle of formula about every 3-4 hours and in the evenings he gets 1 container of Stage 1 baby food
He is fascinated by the tv, I think that it is mainly the colors

1. He stopped taking it at 2 months
2. I'm trying now (he's 6 months)
3. 3 1/2 months
4. 5 months
5. 5 months (before that I fed him in my lap to avoid less stuff in the family room-- big mistake, use the high chair as soon as you start solids)
6. He only eats about a jar a day and gets most of his calories from breast milk--- he just wont eat more than that.
7. 2 months- but only for brief amounts of time (5-10 min. tops)

Don't worry about how everyone else answers though, do what you feel is right because every child is different and you know your child better than any one else.

I took my sons pacifer away at about a year old.
The sippy cup my son started using at about 10 months old.
My son sat up by him self at around 8 months old.
I started teaching the word "no" as soon as possible, even though they don't always understand.=)
I started using the high chair at 4 months old when I started giving him jars of baby food.
At 5 months old, in the morning for breakfast around 8:30am I would give him 4 tablespoons of baby cereal and one jar of stage one of a fruit. then at 12:30 i would give him a bottle then at around 3:30 i would give him one vegetable and one fruit then about 5:30 i would give him a bottle then he would have his last bottle about 930 then off to bed and relaxation time!!!
As far as the T.V. he started watching dora and little einsteins as soon as he could see the T.V.

I hope this helps you out somewhat my son is now 4 years old and we have a daughter 8 months old, so if you have any other questions or just want to chat about kids, my email is amandabuerger@yahoo.com
