I just bought a new Dell with a SATA hard drive. I have a two year old West.Dig. 120 Gb HDD that I would like to add onto my system. The old HDD is a parallel ATA (40 pin), can it be added and will it be compatible? I do have one open 40 pin slot on the board that the manual says is open for a floppy drive. I understand the SATA was designed to replace the master/slave format of the parallel ATA type. Help???

Floppy drive ribbon cable will not work, so forget about that.
I am kind of suprized they even install that anymore. I think perhaps it might be for a Hard Drive?

Look for a connector that says IDE or IDE OPT.
I believe, if you have a CD or DVD player, then that is connected to the IDE OPT. There should be 2 connectors at the end of the ribbon cable. 1 that connects the CD/DVD player an an extra one.
You can use that one to install the Hard Drive.

Since you are not installing a SATA drive, you will need to configure the drive as either MASTER/SLAVE.

If your mobo provides SATA and PATA hard disk interfaces they should be able to run together. You need to check with your mobo manual or the mobo maker's website that it does allow them both to be used simultaneously. You'll probably have to make sure it bots from the right one too!

BUT flobby disks do not use PATA... if the manual says it's a floppy cable header it *will not* run a PATA drive. Floppy cables are usually narrower (I can't remember how wide... about 32 pins as opposed to 40).

You cannot use it on a floppy connector it will not work.

You actually need a PATA connector.

Check the manual to see if it specifically shoes any other 40pin connectors.

You must enter the BIOS, and configure your SATA drive to be recognized as IDE.
