taught like in grade school? then i guess big bang...

for more sophisticated audiences, like my friend up there who mentioned M-theory, there are yet even more potential explanations out there.

I would suggest you read Brian Greene's The FAbric of the Cosmos: Space, Time & the Texture of REality. he discusses pretty much all the theories about the creation and also looks into a whole host of other cool stuff, like questions about time's arrow, time travel, teleportation, extra dimensions, string theory (and M-theory), the shape of the universe, and much much more....awesome (he's a physist, and has math and empirical study on his side, not some lunny philosopher or other person with too much intelligence and time on their hands)...it is easy to read and quite exciting...i highly recommend that book

In the beginning, there was no beginning. The Universe came into existence due to a breaking of symmetry of dimensions and forces within a inverse manifold of multiple possibilites in the greater Multiverse. The Universe is a creation without a creator.

Yep, big bang. The steady state theory doesn't have much left to support it, most of the evidence points to the big bang.
