I am in a business law class and we are doing a mock case. the case is about a tree trimming company butchering some guy's trees on his front lawn. the trees are red maples. they are between 30-40 years old

Holy COW! Those trees sell by the FOOT! Very valuable!

30-50 yr.old maples ruined would get a good rap on the knuckles!

Yes, trees can effect a properties value. In most cases they will increase the property value. Not only do they provide shade and help heat gain on loss of the house but the help to make a tranquil environment. The other thing that people like about trees on their property is the wildlife that is attracted by them. If a tree was butchered on my property I would probably sue.

The trees add value to the property and considered a property improvement. Look to laws regarding rights of way...they will lead you in the right direction. Each property improvement has value, and the "butchering" can be considered a detriment to the land value.

As well as the cosmetic aspects, trees can block traffic noise, protect the property from crime and red maples could be harvested for making maples syrup. All these could add value to the property.
