I want to know what minimum wage should be.

There was a time when people didn't work for money at all. In fact, when I lived in Europe, in exchange for work, I often received a meal with the family or food to take with me in lieu of payment.

The minimum wage is a farce. People have become too greedy, thinking they deserve some kind of arbitrary minimum pay based on education. I graduated from college in 2001 and went to work for $8.05/hour in a biotech company. When I found out that they worked with infectious diseases that had no cure, I went back to school. I received my master's degree in December 2004, and spent over a year unable to find a job in my field. I went to work for UPS at...$8/hour. Eventually, I decided that I would rather do something I enjoy than earn a particular wage, and so I went to work for the government at $17/hour equivalent (I'm salaried).

Even when I worked for UPS, I earned enough to pay for my needs. If I didn't have enough, my savings took care of a few extravagances. I don't have a TV, a new car, a lot of furniture, or tons of stuff. My hobbies obtain a budgeted amount of funding based on my earnings, and I stick to a budget. We do not need to adopt immediately the standard of living we enjoyed when living with our parents which standard they achieved only after 20 years or so in the work force.

The only way to get what you want is to work for it. If you're not earning enough, get a different job or a second one. However, why should a company have to compensate someone with a wage that isn't offset by the amount of work a person contributes to the organization? Fair wages goes both ways, and if a person doesn't deserve a particular wage, employers should remain free to pay them less.

Minimum wage. And even that is not a true answer. If I was in a desperate financial situation, I would work for nearly any wage. I earn well, but that does not mean I can throw an outlandish figure. Why? I do not have enough money in the bank at 24 to support myself for the rest of my life. So what does that mean? If no one was willing to pay me more than minimum wage, I would have to take a job at minimum wage. If I was fire tommorrow, I would likely not take a job below $25-30/hr. Why? That is my current rock bottom wage. I have enough money in the bank to live 6-8 months without pay and if things got really rough, I can always move in with my folks. But lets say no one was willing to pay me more than minimum wage, and 2-3 years went by without me finding a job. In such a situation, I would be forced to accept a lower wage. Now let us make an assumption that I moved outside the United States to a 3rd world country. Additionally, let us assume that the country had no minimum wage and that I had no opportunity to return to the United States. If the only job offered to me was for 1 dollar an hour, and if I had to take that job or starve, I would work for 1 dollar an hour. So what are you asking? What is the rock bottom pay I will accept today? Or what is the rock bottom pay I would accept when I am desperate? The numbers will differ drastically.

Same as CL R, and believe me so would Steve. C, if he couldn't find a job, and had nowhere to live. Regardless of college.

If I was starving and didn't have a job, I would work for almost anything.
