I opened an account at Lloyds TSB when I had no job. At most banks, you don't need to be earning, just make sure you have some money to open an account with. I opened mine with £20. I didn't get a job until a year after opening my account. It came in handy though when I started work as I didn't have to faff about getting an account, I already had one waiting and was able to give bank details to my employer straight the way.
